Undercurrents
Undercurrents is a film I made with fellow sea lover and artist Bronwyn Harvey. As creatives and surfers, we started with a simple question: “Why, living in landlocked London, do we spend all our spare time and money heading to cold, often messy waves in the hope of one fleeting moment gliding along the face of a wave?”.
As we met others who shared our passion, we began to explore the psychological and emotional effects of being in and around water. Undercurrents examines the concept of ‘blue health’ and how immersion in water environments can shape wellbeing, creativity, and perception. This project was the beginning of my ocean photography, where these same themes of presence, flow, and the restorative qualities of the sea continue to inform my work.
The film follows two female surfers with very different approaches: Arlene Maltman, one of Britain and Europe’s early female surfing champions, and Natalie Fox, environmental activist, yogi, and free surfer. Their experiences are complemented by insights from mindfulness specialist Dr Tamara Russell and blue health expert Lizzi Larbalestier.
Filmed across coastlines and moments in the sea, Undercurrents reflects the internal motivations that draw people back to the ocean time and again. The film has won several independent awards. To watch the full film, visit our dedicated site.
