3. Unexpected Terrain

Unexpected Terrain emerged from an unplanned encounter with the sea. Swimming with my camera towards the end of the day, the water suddenly shifted and a series of large waves rose without warning. I photographed instinctively, responding to the force and movement around me.

Only later, when revisiting the images, did the intricate detail within the waves begin to reveal itself. What had been shifting water appeared transformed — suspended in the frame as dense, textured forms. The surfaces felt almost geological, like mountainous terrain, momentarily held still.

In the photographs, something transient becomes unexpectedly solid. The images hold a brief, unstable landscape that existed for only a moment before dissolving back into movement.
